Fred Schlabach

Education - B.A. Degree in Graphic Design from Goshen College, 1989.

Carpenter - After working as a property manager for 19 years, I started my own carpentry and property maintenance business in 2010.  Broad Brook Carpentry, LLC specializes in design and renovation.

Wine Making - In 2010 one of my clients wanted to install a vineyard using cold hardy grape varieties.  I've had the privilege of working with him on this project.  From building the trellising, planting the grape vines, pruning and finally making wine, it has been an incredible learning experience.

Vineyard Trellising - I have been designing and installing vineyard trellising for the past 10 years for local winemakers.

Photography - The advent of the digital camera has reignited an interest in photography that first came to light in high school.  Pair that with my interest in vehicles and you have the images on this website, Instagram feed and Facebook page.

Artistic Philosophy - I’ve had an interest in vehicles as long as I can remember.  In particular, I am drawn to the design elements that make cars unique.  This is especially evident from the late ‘30s until the mid ‘70s.  Designers used lots of chrome, hood ornaments, massive fins for a time and of course the two tone paint job.  Cars had personalities.  This was all before aerodynamics and gas mileage were important and car design began to morph into boring plastic clad capsules that are mostly similar.

In recent years, I have become interested in exploring the artistic beauty in vehicles that have been discarded.  I have come to see the rust and patina as texture and the dents, corrosion and moss as an embellishment rather than a detractor.  All of these elements tell the story of this vehicles life just as our scars and wrinkles tell a bit about us as people.
